I was catching up with some Gentoo new lately and found that they released Paludis a few days ago.

Paludis

Paludis is the package management system that was created by one of the old Gentoo developers to address some of the issues that was faced by portage, gentoo’s package management system. For the record, I love portage, I think it’s the best thing they invented after internet porn :D. But some parts of portage do feels a little “hackish”. Reverse dependencies, for example, is a hit and miss affair. And updating any big component like X or qt always makes you nervous. And while the gentoo project as a whole have excellent documentation there are some voodo still going on inside portage that you can only discover after a trip to the forums. Paludis plans to solve all these problems and do it much faster than portage.

On the developer side Palidus is said to follow more formal codding standards than the spaghetti code that is alleged to be in portage. It is said to follow OO standards as well as provide common interface for different repository types(Palidus can handle different repositories natively like SVN, CVS etc..). And overall better code structure. I can’t confirm nor deny any of these as I never saw the code nor do I plan to dive the source anytime soon.

If you want to test paludis you can either run it alongside portage if you are squirmish about removing portage. Paludis will have some limitation in this mode. Or you can run paludis exclusively.

Summary

So far from what I can see the project very promising is coming along nicely. I really like that Palidus doesn’t depend on python. That is one less dependancy to worry about. And it also seem to address all the sore points that portage is facing. I’m not sure if it will replace portage, they are some really devoted portage lovers in the gentoo forums. I’ll see if I can get a weekend free to try my hands on paludis. Interesting to see how much it lives up to it’s claims.
